Alois killed one of the chickens. We buried it in the yard.

When Urahara gets there, he'll see why: Luca's on the ground sobbing, face tucked down into his knees and his hands over his ears. The PCD is now discarded, though it's only by chance he was able to hit the yellow button at all in his blind attempt to do something to call for help.
Not too far away from him are the remnants of red balloons, just starting to go off for the night, one of them a flash bang that had caught Luca by surprise. ]

No need to startle him any more than he already has been, if those pieces of red plastic are anything to go by.]

action.
Finally, heavy limbed by emptiness and added gravity, after the sky's become star speckled for a few hours, Alois drags himself to Urahara's side. He knows, without having to ask, that he and Mary both must be aware of Luca's absence. But, they're not feeling it the way he is, and he could cut both of their throats each for having him burden it alone. That's what he thinks, but it's a glimmer—gone as soon as it's come. Replaced by the thought that he cannot live without people, without anyone, and who, again, is it that he loathes more? Jim or Alois?
He finds Urahara and settles next to him, forehead going to his shoulder even before he can manage words. Almost, he asks, when will Urahara and he go looking for him, but he knows well enough by now. So, instead, after a stout, shuddering exhale— ]
You can't feel him anymore. Can you?
action.
[Urahara dismisses the thought of lying to Alois as soon as the thought occurs to him. He smells of the Wastelands, equal parts sand and dirt, pinewood and scorched earth, had been out there, scouring what he could of it after he had searched the entire city. He knows what Luca returns to, and even though it's not as bad as Alois and Ciel's lives, he wants to keep the boy here. With his family.
And Alois... he knows the toil it took on Jim, the guilt Alois still carries now, how terribly Luca's death had affected him. He's not sure he knows what to do, not sure that he has the right words to say, doesn't know how to make any of this less painful. Not for the first time, he wishes Al was still here.
Instead, he limits himself to that one word and wraps his arms around that frail, tired body. He can't feel it the way Alois does, but he at least feels something, and maybe that might be enough to keep Alois with him. To keep Alois pieced together.]

Good evening, Urahara-san. I am Ryugazaki Rei and Zell-san said that I should get in touch with you since you are a scientist and inventor. Since I do well with subjects like mathematics and science, I felt I should contact you to see if there is some way I might be of assistance now that it has become clear that I'm not leaving this place anytime soon.
Thank you for your consideration.
Video;
A pleasure to meet you, Ryugazaki-san! I would be happy to [have the free labor] have the assistance of another enthusiastic young man such as yourself~ Which field of science are you most comfortable with?

Hello, Mister Urahara~ It's Catherine.
I was wondering if you might have any flexible straws at the bar? You know, the kind that are usually used for drinks.

I may or may not have a straw for you, but that depends on what you have for me in exchange~♥

letter
I'm not surprised to inform you that by some quirk of fate, space, time or the Animus, or all of the above, recently I have come into possession of a few letters you had addressed to me.
I'm not in Adstringendum any more, but from the snatches of pictures you describe, it sounds as horrifying as ever. Your mind and senses being taken over? Castiel up to strange rituals? A broken teaset?!? I leave you all for five minutes (or has it been five months, five years?) and look at what it comes to. I wish I could come back to you, to put things right, but more importantly to see you again. The things that come after that city are more pleasant... I won't say too much, but don't worry for me. Still, if I could come back for you, I will admit openly that I would. When you knew me there I was a private man, I let much of this go unsaid, and now with one letter to write you and no other chance likely to come again, I will not let another opportunity slip by.
I think the hardest thing about Adstringendum was the problem of hope. How can you keep it? Both of us had spent years there by the time I faded. The city changed me so thoroughly I would have scarcely recognized the man I was when I arrived. In the... second year, I think, after Kurotsuchi (whose name I'm probably not spelling correctly) and after Yuca's great betrayal, I had learned that my fate was not in my own hands, and it was beginning to kill me. The powerlessness of life there suffocated me, and the guilt of life in my own world chased me every day.
And then there was you. You clawed neatly past masks that I thought had become fused to my skin years ago. You reconnected me to the community as a whole- you're joking, I think, about me being the 'reasonable one,' when I know what you've been doing with the electricity for years.
Adstringendum is a sand castle at the edge of a wild sea. We build it high as we can, the animus sweep the tide in and out, the citizens are children, staying only at the mercy of their parents, ripped out whenever an incomprehensible whim takes an adult whose shortsighted busy-bodiness keeps them from understanding the urgency of the little builders. The tide climbs ever higher, the children grab their pails, run faster and don't want to say goodbye.
But this is perfect for you. You laugh like no one else I have ever known, and have all the best things it is that children have about you. You never really give up hope, even when it might be easier, even when the tide is at its' highest.
Rest. Be gentle with yourself. Above all, have faith; Adstringendum is not the end of all things, and a lifetime laughing on glorious golden beaches is not the worst thing in the world, not when you still have ones there who love you.
I hope I see you soon,
-XB
Letters for the event
I think I approve of this Catherine-san. Have to wonder what she's accepting for payment. This Shizuku-san too. Has anyone gotten rid of the snake? Always thought it would be good security.
--
I do keep hoping that you find these. Pretty sure you don't, but oh well. Not like I'm ny good at writing them anyway. Hardly know what to say.
--
Kisuke,
I always knew how many nights there were, because there were just as many for me. We were able to fool each other on that, once.
--
They are only nights. I know how
shittybad they can be, but they are only nights and you have other things besides them. You always have, you know.
