Well, if it is, I have to say... this would probably be the most dramatic miscalculation I've made to date! Either way, aside from Unohana-taichou and Hisagi-fukutaichou, might I ask who else is here?

If it had worked, what was the experiment supposed to have done?

From what I understand, it was meant to complete some sort of formula for universal reality. The Unified Universe project intended to combine all realities in order to understand a particular one. But instead, it seems as though all realities were brought smashing together with this place in a very catastrophic and irreversible way.
