URAHARA KISUKE the scientist Urahara Kisuke is a man of many faces, ranging from laid back, silly little shopkeeper to serious, dangerously intelligent ex-captain. These faces can change within the blink of an eye, leaving one wondering exactly what his true character is. The answer? A very mysterious individual who once described himself as a mere honest, handsome, perverted businessman. Yet this ‘businessman’ is one who can always be found near the scene of some important event, seeming to have a knack for arriving right when he is needed. Incredibly gifted and highly intelligent, Urahara is capable of taking in a scene and calculating all the resulting possibilities, creating plans within plans, staying ahead of the game, only stumbling occasionally. He rarely ever openly intervenes, preferring to work from the shadows, acting as the catalyst that gets everyone else to do the work for him as he gathers information and strategizes. Constantly carrying a fan and wearing his signature green and white bucket hat, he uses both items to shield himself from scrutiny, whether it be pulling the hat down to cover the mischievous glint in his eyes or flipping the fan open to hide that up-to-no-good smile of his. To him, facts were meant to be questioned and rules made to be broken. He’s where he is now because he’s been disobeying orders in one way or another from the very beginning and though he gives off a sense of impish deviousness, has proven himself to be a responsible and trustworthy man time after time. BACKGROUND the exile Not much is known about Urahara’s life before he became a captain of the Gotei 13. All that is known is that he was childhood friends with Shihoin Yoruichi and Tsukabishi Tessai, having grown up in the former’s mansion alongside the two of them. He entered the Gotei 13 at the same time Yoruichi joined the Covert Ops, and brief flashbacks have shown them to have trained together in the underground training cavern that he dug in Seireitei. He eventually became third seat of the second division, which had fallen under Yoruichi’s command, combining the forces of the Gotei 13 and the Covert Ops. Part of his duties as third seat involved heading the third unit of the Onmitsukido—the Detention Unit. When the then captain of the twelfth division was promoted to the Royal Guard, Yoruichi recommended Urahara to take the spot. Having already obtained his bankai in three days through the use of his Tenshintai invention, Urahara successfully passed the captain’s exam and became the captain of the twelfth division. Immediately following his promotion, Urahara set about creating what is now the Research and Technological Development Bureau, releasing Kurotsuchi Mayuri from the Maggots Nest in the process since he viewed him capable of great contributions if used correctly. Ten years passed after his promotion when odd events started to occur in Rukongai, events that involved the disappearance of souls… disappearances that would not have been so remarkable had they not left their clothes behind, giving rise to the belief that their soul forms had no longer been able to house some sort of energy. This led to Urahara researching ways to help stabilize or power the soul, resulting in the development of gigai and the Hogyuku. It was only until that fateful night, when four captains and four vice-captains were hollowfied and Aizen’s treachery revealed that things came to head, Urahara and Tessai arriving just in time to prevent the murder of their fellow shinigami, only to be accused of carrying out hollowfication experiments and sentenced to exile when instead they had been trying to save their comrades. Fortunately, Yoruichi arrived on the scene to whisk them away to Urahara’s underground cavern where he managed to bring the eight captains and vice-captains back from the brink of becoming hollows with the help of the Hogyoku. He then proceeded to make gigai for all of them before making their escape to the human world and it is there that Urahara’s history once again became shrouded in mystery since there are no specific mentions on exactly how they managed to stay undetected by Seireitei, just that they did. Eventually resurfacing in Karakura Town, Urahara opened up a shop that catered to both the humans of the town and the shinigami that were assigned there for hollow duty. It is essentially this shop that eventually brings everything around in a full circle, for it is because he runs the shop that Rukia does not find it odd that he provided her with a gigai, a gigai that would hide her from Seireitei, but as he failed to mention, would also drain her reiatsu and eventually turn her into a human. As we later find out, the reason for his doing so was to hide the Hogyoku he had buried in her soul, though when and why he did so have yet to be explained. However, Rukia was found and taken back to Seireitei, leaving a gravely injured Ichigo behind. Urahara saved him, and then proceeded to turn him into a shinigami, training him for ten days before opening a senkai gate and sending him through to Seireitei to save Rukia in an attempt to keep the Hogyoku out of Aizen’s hands. The attempt failed and Aizen was able to obtain the Hogyoku, revealing himself as a traitor before escaping to Hueco Mundo. Sometime between then and the start of the winter war, Yamamoto got in touch with Urahara, asking him for two things. The first was to stabilize the garganta so that shinigami with captain level reiatsu could safely pass through to Hueco Mundo at full power, and the second was to create a Tenkaikezzu around Karakura Town in order to transfer it to Rukongai. It is right after the four pillars of the Tenkaikezzu are activated that Urahara is brought to Adstringendum. SAMPLES the showman [JOURNAL || VIDEO] [The PCD video flickers on to give a view of the sky, a surprised voice sounding from nearby.] Ara? This is certainly not what was supposed to happen when the Tenkaikezzu was activated. Could it be that one of my calculations was off? I know I am capable of making mistakes, but something of this magnitude is really beyond anything I have ever done... [Hesitant click-clacking of approaching getas are heard, followed by the view of Urahara Kisuke looking down at the camera before he bends down and picks it up, bringing it up to his face, studying it curiously.] Hmm... It would seem like you are recording, perhaps a communication device? Either way, if there's anyone watching this, could you please tell me where I am and what is going on? [LOG || THIRD PERSON] He was at it again. An idea had flashed its way across his mind and he just had to go test it out. Today would mark the third day that he had holed himself up in the lab, bent over the bench, working furiously on the device in front of him. The table was littered with scattered paper and disassembled pieces, empty cups of coffee tossed absently over his shoulder at the trash can, most going in, but one or two missing their intended goal. A full cup of the dark brown liquid was resting an arm's length away, the perfect distance for him to absently stretch out an ink-stained hand and bring it to his mouth as his other hand came up to remove the magnifying glasses from his head before running long fingers through the messy, unwashed hair. Gray eyes were fixed intently on the partially assembled thing in front of him, occasionally darting to the sheets with illegible scribbles all over them. It was almost possible to hear the whirling of his mind followed by a click as his eyes lit up, the cup of coffee quickly set back down in its original place, some of the liquid spilling out as he darted forward to continue working with the new flash of insight. | PROFILE the shopkeeper SERIES Bleach NAME Urahara Kisuke DATE OF BIRTH December 31st AGE Unknown HEIGHT 183 cm (6 ft) WEIGHT 69 kg (152 lbs) OCCUPATION Shopkeeper, Scientist, Exiled Shinigami TIMELINE Taken from the end of Ch. 479, after Riruka leaves the shop RESIDENCE - Tenshi Heisouban, the furthest west of the traditional Japanese homes located in the northeast quarter, complete with a training area out in the back. - Solve et Coagula - Natural Health Clinic PRECIOUS BELONGINGS Hat, fan, geta, Benihime and various devices that he's made (private communication lines, kidou barriers, water filters, etc.) ABILITIES the shinigami GENIUS SCIENTIST AND INVENTOR Urahara is accredited with the foundation of the Research and Technological Development Bureau along with various gigai, the Hogyoku, reiatsu-concealing cloak, the Tenshintai, the Tenkaikezzu and quite possibly many more things that we have yet to be introduced to. MASTER STRATEGIST AND TACTICIAN Urahara is a very perceptive and intelligent man, capable of coming up with multiple plans in advance. It is him that Yoruichi and the Vaizards turn towards to come up with plans to combat Aizen, showing how highly the others viewed his intelligence and cunning. His crafty enigmatic personality make it hard for others to read him and figure out what he is planning, making it easier for him to manipulate them into acting the way he wants them to. His fight with Yami shows him to be very observant and analytical, able to quickly analyze the espada’s power and attack patterns, then neutralizing them with his own attacks. BENIHIME (CRIMSON PRINCESS) The unreleased form of his zanpakutou is kept inside the cane that he usually carries around with him, a single shinigami flame marking the bottom of it, allowing him to separate a soul from its physical form. He releases Benihime into its shikai form with the command phrase of “Okiro” or “Awaken”. The handle of the cane stretches into a long hilt, the last couple inches bent at an angle, a crimson tassel dangling off the end. It has no guard, but rather a decorative red string wrapped around where one usually is, a three-loop bow on one side and a folded paper decoration on the other. Above it is a small flower design on a U-shaped piece of metal that covers the first three or four inches of the straight, slim blade, the tip of which ends in a slanted razor-like edge instead of tapering off into a point like most swords. Benihime is a female spirit and has been described by Urahara as ‘not very nice’. Chikasumi no Tate (Blood Mist Shield): Forms a red barrier in front of Urahara, shielding him from attack. It seems to be able to hold out against quite some force before cracking or eroding. "Nake, Benihime": This attack releases crimson energy blasts controlled by Urahara. These blasts have been shown to be able to be of such magnitude as to cancel out Ichigo’s Getsuga Tenshou and an espada’s cero and bala. "Shibari, Benihime": Condensing the energy generated by Benihime into the form of a tangible blood red net, Urahara can throw it over the intended target with a simple slashing motion. The net can further bind and restrict an opponent's movements by constricting to his/her form. "Hiasobi, Benihime": Creates orbs of fire, which when combined with the 'shibari' technique by stabbing the tip of Benihime into the generated net, gives rise to Juzutsunagi (Beaded Mesh). Orbs of fire run along the outside length of the net towards the trapped target, exploding like linked land-mines in a domino formation and creating a tremendously large and devastating explosion upon contact. HAND-TO-HAND Before becoming a captain, Urahara was third seat of the second division and thus part of the Covert Ops, taking up the responsibility of heading the Detention Unit, which required him to be able to master the prisoners with his bare hands. He was shown to be able to effortlessly stop a prisoner that was at least twice his size with a single hand. In addition, as Yoruichi’s childhood friend and sparring partner, he probably has to be pretty good at hand-to-hand combat to keep up with her. KIDOU Having been a captain and then the head of the Research and Technological Development Bureau, it is safe to say that Urahara had an above average knowledge of kidou before his exile. Add that to growing up with and then living in close quarters with Tessai for the past ninety or so years, and it's not surprising to find that his kidou skills are quite high. This can be seen during his battle with Aizen when he cast high level spells in quick succession without the use of incantations, then followed it up with a level 91 Hadou spell. Additionally, he was able to create a unique high-level kidou that could remain undetected until specific conditions were fulfilled in a series of chain reactions. SHUNPO Again, as a captain, ex-Covert Ops member and Yoruichi's best friend and training partner, it's probably safe to say that his shunpo is among some of the fastest in the series.
